Q1 Was Devoid Of Technology IPOs in The United States

For the first time in seven years, a quarter went by without a tech IPO in the U.S. Naturally, there has been a great deal of commentary and speculation as to why that is.

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing Dealogic data, Q1 was only the fourth time this has happened since 1995 (as far as this data goes back). It happened in Q3 2002, Q1 2003, and Q1 2009, which coincide with the Internet bubble bursting and the financial crisis. By comparison, there were five tech IPOs in the U.S. in Q1 2015.

Fortune, which notes that just 11 companies priced offerings on U.S. exchanges in Q1 (biotech companies or special purpose acquisition vehicles), quotes Lise Buyer, founder of IPO consultancy Class V Group as saying, “We need a company with rock-solid numbers to lead the way, because there’s a fleet lining up to go second. There are certainly double-digit numbers of companies working on S-1’s, but bankers do a very good job of scaring people until waiting to go public until after someone else succeeds with one.
